Bras of Summer

May 21st, 2009

Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer. And summer means lighter, carefree clothing, often in lighter colors. Sundresses, tees, camis, bare-shouldered tanks and halter tops can make finding the perfect bra during the summer tough. Lighter clothing may be ideal for the heat of summer, but it can leave you too exposed under fine and delicate materials. But thankfully, manufacturers have gotten wise to the fact that summer clothing can require a special bra.

Here are some bras you can’t live without during the summer:

Convertible bra

Many manufacturers are now making bras with interchangeable adjustable straps that can be adjusted for strapless tops and dresses, cross-back styles, halters, or traditional T-shirts. Worn with one strap, two straps, or no straps, the convertible bra is designed to create the configuration you want with the choice of going strapless or wearing your bra many different ways.

T- Shirt bra

T-shirt bras are seamless, contoured styles that give you a sleek look under lightweight, clingy tops and knit shells, providing a completely smooth look with a natural shape. A demi bra style is great when wearing a plunging or revealing neckline.

Racer back or T- back bra

Showing your straps can be tacky or fashionable, depending on your perspective. However most women want to make sure their straps are hidden and stay hidden. For tank tops and racer back fashions, wear a racer back or t-back bra to keep your bra straps out of view. If you can’t find one in your size, a convertible bra can be modified to achieve the same result. Another solution is attaching a little plastic disc to the back of your straps, which turns a regular bra into a racer back bra.

Strapless bra

A strapless bra is a must-have in your wardrobe. Wear under spaghetti strapped tanks and strapless tops. If you believe you can’t find one that gives you a nice shape, is comfortable, and or stays up, try again, because there are more options than ever before. Even if you wear size DD bras and larger, you can find one that is supportive and flattering to your figure.

Backless/Strapless bra

A backless/strapless is the solution for extremely low cut plunging backs or fronts. Totally free of straps and nearly invisible under clothing and sheer and halter tops, this bra solves many wardrobe problems because the bra cups stick to your body and becomes a part of you. You can create different degrees of cleavage by positioning the bra cups closer or farther away.

What items do you recommend for a COMPLETE lingerie wardrobe?

You may not need all these garments, but this is what we recommend:

  • 6 everyday bras – seamless, padded, minimizer, or sexy
  • 2 sports bras
  • 1 strapless bra
  • 1 backless bra
  • 12 everyday panties – thong, bikini, brief
  • 3 control briefs
  • light, med, or firm
  • 1 body slimmer
  • Sleepwear – gowns and pajamas (travel, sexy, comfy)
  • Robes – travel, silk, terry, cotton, chenille, or velour
  • 1 pr slippers
  • 12 pair hosiery – control tops, nude, black sheer or opaque
  • 12 pair socks – trouser, sport, sheer
  • 2 bathing suits
  • 1 coverup

I have a dress with a very low v-neckline. My regular bra shows. Do you have any suggestions for a bra that will work with this dress?

If your regular bra shows when wearing a low-cut neckline, you have several great options:

natoriNatori’s Convertible Ultra-Light Contour bra features a clear plastic band in front to allow it to be worn with the most plunging necklines. Lightly-lined and constructed of semi-sheer mesh, this underwire bra  has convertable straps so you can wear it regular, criss-cross, racerback and halter style.

Another option is one of the new deep plunging bras on the market such as LZ’s Up Free bra. This bra provides incredible support and fabulous cleavage for extremely low necklines. It’s also convertible, so you can wear the straps regular, halter, or criss-cross.

You might also want to try a front-closure bra designed to be extra low in the front, such

wacoal front as Wacoal’s T-Back bra, style # 65124. This lightweight bra with front closure has unlined molded cups and underwire for great support. Addtionally, it features racerback straps, making it a great choice to wear for tops with deep or cutout armholes, or a demi-cup bra style.

cubeAnd finally, if these bras don’t work for you, you might also want to also consider a camisole such as Cosabella’s Talco camisole which is styled with a shelf bra and adjustable straps.
